The cumulative crude oil handling capacity of these SPMs stand at 104 million metric tonne per year, stated the government in a written reply to a question by Arvind Rana, BJP MLA from Surat-East. A SPM is a floating buoy anchored offshore to allow handling of liquid cargo such as petroleum products offloaded from tanker ships.
They are used mostly in areas where dedicated facility to unload liquid cargo is not available at the port. These SPMs are connected to the port through sub-sea pipelines.
